Within a composition there are often shapes that can be subdivided into smaller shapes. For example, if we start with the shape of the artwork, we can identify a few large shapes. The arrangement of these shapes is called the composition. However,
if we examine any one of these individual shapes, we will find that it is also composed of a number of shapes. It may also be possible to break each of these shapes into still smaller shapes. Depending on the complexity and the level of detail exhibited by the artwork, we may be able to continue this process of subdividing the artwork to reveal many levels of shapes within shapes.
